Onychomycosis (Nail Fungal Infection)

Abstract: The Ayurvedic study of skin diseases is unique in that it allows the practitioner to assess and address the conditions precisely, as they are easily observable and the medicine can be applied directly. The skin, being our outermost layer of protection from the environment, is a clear reflection of the state of Ojas. The skin can be the place where an aggravated dosha relocates and manifests or the tissue where opportunistic microorganisms decide to live. In the case of onychomycosis, even though dermatophytes are responsible for the infection, Ayurveda is more concerned with the root cause of the condition: the health of the digestion and the immune system (a function of Ojas). While Western medicine focuses on killing the pathogen, Ayurveda’s approach assures that the body itself is able to fight the infection and prevent it from reoccurring. This presentation explores the Ayurvedic treatment of nail fungal infections including the use of diet, herbs, and general lifestyle to support immune function.
